Bringing South Florida’s history of the Cold War to life in
EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK
March 7, 2026
Proposed by: The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks
In 2025, more than 1,500 visitors and local participants came together at the historic Nike Missile Base HM-69 in Everglades National Park for a powerful celebration of history, community, and preservation. With the support of South Florida organizations, The Alliance, and Everglades National Park, attendees experienced a unique remembrance of the Cold War era, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the culture of the 1960s and 1970s.
Highlights from last year included: Opening ceremonies, K-9 demonstrations, Auto Show of period vehicles, Live music, Food vendors, Kids’ activities, Guest presentations, Ranger tours through the site, Veterans’ groups and local history museum displays.
And so much more…
Set within the still-standing Cold War–era structures of HM-69, the event gave participants an authentic connection to one of South Florida’s most important historic sites.
